Toronto Ski Club requires a General Manager, an effective leader who has an exceptional work ethic, attention to detail, and strengths and experience in both client and community relationship management. The candidate will meet the demands of our growing club membership and enhance TSC’s market position as a premier Family escarpment Ski club, located at the base of Blue Mountain Resorts.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The requirements of the role involve strong leadership of all aspects of TSC’s year-round operations, including:
Human resources: Responsibility to screen, interview, hire and train managers and supervisors that report to him/ her; support and coaching of staff/Managers; discipline, evaluations and feedback required of staff/ managers; supervise the hiring and performance management of all members of the TSC team.
Administration: strong organizational skills and financial acumen to provide effective oversight and delegation of duties and ensure all member and administrative services are completed in an high quality, accurate and timely manner, including member communication, employee performance management, accounting, payroll, and financial reporting.
Policies and procedures: ensure that managers and supervisors implement and support the policies with their staff and that policies and procedures evolve with TSC’s operational strategies and membership requirements, updating them as necessary; ensures that new staff and members are orientated to the club, as appropriate
Member services: manage member policies and practices and develops new policies for Board approval where required; solicit member feedback through formal and informal channels and be responsive to member concerns/issues; and promotes timely communications with members.
Alpine: Work with Alpine Programs Manager and Alpine Administrator Manager to deliver exceptional competitive and recreational programs to members and athletes. The GM will assist in managing relationships with partners and organizations such as Blue Mountain Resorts, Alpine Ontario, Snowboard Ontario, Alpine Canada as well as our partner ski clubs across the escarpment and province. Work with the Alpine Department to secure and develop sponsorship programs for the Alpine department as well as the club. The GM will maintain and develop their extensive knowledge of policy, rules and legislation in the ski industry. The GM also works in collaboration with the Alpine Programs Manager and Alpine Administrator to foster employee culture and develop internal communication mechanisms amongst the coaches, instructors and other members of the clubhouse management team.
Business Directors and Club Governance: The GM is responsible to work with the Board to develop the long-term strategy for the Club and operationalizes it by setting the annual strategic priorities.. He/she reports / meets monthly with the board, and maintain on-going communication with Board Directors and President of the club. The manager ensures compliance with club by-laws supports the Annual General Meeting of the membership and is responsible to communicate how the clubs’ marketing strategies are performing with respect to attracting new members, member service rankings, and the profitability/ financial health of the club.
Team Leadership and Culture - Leads and provides oversight to the day-to-day operations of the clubs’ departments, ensuring that it collectively stays on task with regard to the clubs’ overall vision, mision and values. He/ she must be both disciplinarian and motivator for the team, a model of efficiency and productivity, and must understand the club's culture and business philosophy in order to make decisions that reflect TSC's over-arching principles and enable the leader to shape the clubs’ future
Food and Beverage – Provide oversight to the day to day operations of our member marche dining and corporate special events. He/ she must have a solid understanding of food and beverage delivery systems, costing, inventory management and staffing.
General Qualities and Qualifications: The General Manager Position is one that requires a combination of skills, experience and expertise/education. The successful General Manager candidate will have superior leadership skills; work well with the TSC team and Board of Directors.
The successful candidate shall have the ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy in all club matters.
- Is a visionary and a strategist. Able to think outside the box on revenue generating and cost control ideas. Can look beyond today to explore ideas for the future.
Understands good governance – how to leverage the knowledge and experience of Board membership while being comfortable that the General Manager has full operational accountability including financial stewardship, customer service and talent management.
- Works independently with limited or no supervision
- Has superior decision-making skills, problem-solving skills and conflict-management abilities.
- Able to quickly develop knowledge of TSC, its culture and membership services. Has personal values that align with the club’s values.
- Market focused - a champion of new membership recruitment in daily operations.
Able to / or ensures that appropriate training is provided to support marketing/ membership communication efforts, and the efficient and effective use of the clubs’ systems and financial& accounting processes.
- Able to lever talent, and effectively delegate tasks & roles, and accountabilities.
The candidate should have a demonstrated track record, with strong organizational, leadership, communication, and sales and marketing skills. Additional requirements include:
- A strong financial acumen with a focus on policies, procedures and controls.
- Experience in managing a leadership team.
- The candidate should be professional, comfortable working in a multi-generational club and with all levels of employees – management through to the front-line team..
- Successful candidates should have a minimum of seven years leadership/management experience.
- Experience in managing the delivery of Alpine competitive and recreational programs is required.
- The candidate may possess a bachelor’s, or graduate program, in a related field of study (or the equivalent experience), commensurate with the General Manager role.
Terms of Reference
Full Time Year Round Position: Salary is commensurate with experience.
5 days per week minimum. Work on holidays, weekends and evenings required
Performance review after 90 days and annual written performance review in May.
