Call for Applications - Assistant Coaches


Positions Available (2): Assistant Coach - Forwards  / Assistant Coach - Backs

This are volunteer positions, but will include outfitting, travel to away games, and is an excellent opportunity to build your resume. We will be accepting applications until February 29, 2016.

The club is looking for technically competent, reliable and organized coaches who can work in a team environment. Applicants should foster a respectful and competitive learning environment while placing player safety above all else.

About the Team: The Gee-Gees men’s rugby club was established in 2002 and has evolved into a recognized Competitive Club by the University of Ottawa. The team is registered with the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO), Rugby Ontario and Rugby Canada. The club is managed by a student-led executive, with support from volunteer coaches and an administrator.

With men’s rugby not being a recognized CIS sport, this club operates on an exhibition schedule. Fixtures are arranged against varsity and non-varsity teams such as; Queens University, McGill University, University of Montreal, Bishop’s University, RMC, Carleton University and more. The program attracts 50-60 talented student-athletes each season. The season runs from August to November and consists of a 5-day training camp in late August, 2-3 practices per week, 7-10 games and 1-2 tournaments. A winter session that focuses on skill development and 7’s rugby takes place between January and April.

Assistant Coach Responsibilities:

  • Attend practices and games
  • Provide specialised instruction for position specific skills
  • Follow and implement a practice plan
  • Attend and contribute to coaching meetings to build practice plans
  • Lineup Selection
  • Provide strategic advice for on-field strategy
  • Track injury and manage re-entry post injury
  • Track practice attendance and progression of fundamental skills
  • Observe, collect and share statistical data on game performance
  • Track conditioning and fitness statistics
  • Recruiting

Assets for Applicants

  • Level 1 NCCP Rugby
  • Level 2 NCCP Rugby
  • Experience coaching rugby
  • French and English language skills
  • Experience in conditioning for rugby
  • Experience in coaching 7’s Rugby

Expected Skills and Experience for all applicants:

  • Technical rugby knowledge and strong fundamentals i.e. pass/catch, tackle, breakdown and decision-making
  • Recent experience playing rugby, either still playing or recently retired (last 5 years)
  • Safe and clear Instruction techniques
  • Able to provide feedback in a respectful and constructive manner
  • Able to adapt to various skills level, beginner to elite
  • Strong Organizational skills
  • Be available for 7-10 hours per week during season
