The Canadian Sport Institute Calgary (CSI Calgary) mission is to provide a world-leading, multisport, daily training environment for podium athletes and coaches, through expert leadership, services and programs.  Within its broader mandate, the CSI provides a variety of programs and services, including physiological testing, monitoring and program design.


For the right individual, this role presents a rare opening to gain leadership experience and learn from the renowned CSI Calgary. The Strength & Conditioning Coach (S&C Coach) role requires an energetic and interpersonal individual, who is passionate about working with high performance and development athletes.  This position reports directly to the Manager of Performance Services as well as has technical oversight from the technical leadership team.


The right candidate will utilize their extensive background in high performance sport settings to play an integral role in the delivery of world-class strength & conditioning services at WinSport’s Canmore Nordic Centre.  The S&C Coach is responsible for operationally and technically leading in the daily training environment (DTE) and for planning, consulting and delivering strength programs to the targeted Nordic Sports (Cross Country, Biathlon and Para Nordic) based in Canmore.  This contract position is maternity leave coverage.  There will be a 6 month review completed with the intent to extend this S&C support role through to the end of the quadrennial (Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics) and beyond.


This position will have the unique opportunity to be mentored by some of the best exercise science experts in the country.  Professional development is structured into the position to provide leadership and educational opportunities from sport science colleagues in order to integrate best practices into the CSI Calgary daily training culture.

  • Work with head S&C Coach to design strength programs for specific sports and individual athletes, establishing short and long term goals for all aspects of the training cycle leading into Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics
  • Deliver sport-specific exercises, exercise sequences, sets, repetitions and recovery periods and coach athletes on correct exercise techniques, safety measures and other methods to maximize the value of training sessions
  • Deliver evidence based interventions to athletes and teams; ability to make ‘on your feet’ decisions around loading, intensity and movement specific components in the DTE
  • Undertake research to understand the demands of assigned sports and obtain the best available information on appropriate strength techniques (ie. Ski & shooting mechanics)
  • Evaluate and prioritize those strength components necessary to achieve optimal performance levels
  • Work closely with Sport Physiologist in an integrated manner to generate performance solutions
  • Work seamlessly in an Integrated Support Team (particularly exercise physiology, physiotherapy and coaching staff) to make necessary adjustments in the DTE and reflect on communication with all assigned training group coaches
  • Within assigned sports perform athlete monitoring for S&C, reporting and implement long-term performance plans
  • Lead the delivery of physical monitoring systems, including tracking, reporting and analysis of results to athlete and coaches
  • Facilitate ongoing communication with assigned training group coaches/directors and athletes to implement long-term performance plans
  • Innovate the growth of knowledge throughout the Canadian Sport System

  • Special projects as assigned by CSI



  • Undergraduate Degree in Kinesiology, sport science or related field
  • Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength & Conditioning Association
  • Knowledge of Nordic and/or Endurance Sport requirements
  • Minimum of 4 years working in an applied sport science environment and demonstrated ability to obtain results and athlete performance
  • Master Degree (obtained or in progress) in Kinesiology, sport science or related field is an asset
  • Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology is an asset
  • NCCP Olympic lifting level 1 or equivalent
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Strong knowledge base of Exercise Physiology
  • Excellent S&C coaching skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of independence and initiative
